Set in 1825, the story follows Maddalena Mallia, a woman who ends up spending a week in prison.

Inside, she is sent to spin cotton on a machine alongside eight other female prisoners, all living, washing and working together under the watch of the guards. As the days pass, the harshness of prison life begins to shift into something more human.

Through their work and shared confinement, the women start revealing the stories of their lives and the circumstances that led them through the prison gates.
